WASHINGTON, October 29 (RIA Novosti) – The United States will assign $10 million as additional humanitarian aid for refugees from Syria, according to the US Department of State press release.
"Today, Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees, and Migration Anne C. Richard announced that the United States will provide $10 million in additional humanitarian assistance to help communities in the region hosting the more than 3 million refugees from Syria," the press release published Tuesday reads.
The new assistance is aimed at improving schools, building health clinics, extending and improving water and sewer infrastructure at the communities hosting Syrian refugees, according to the US State Department.
The US Department of State urged governments all over the world to increase their contribution to the international humanitarian effort for Syrian refugees and continue accepting those fleeing violence.
The United States has already provided over $2.9 billion in humanitarian assistance "inside Syria and throughout the region," the press release reads.
According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), more than half of Syria's population has been forced to seek asylum in Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, and Iraq. Only 57 percent of funds estimated by UNHCR as necessary for Syrian refugees have been collected, with the main donors being the United States, European Union and Kuwait.
Anti-government protests broke out in Syria in March 2011, leading to a civil war, which has been going on in the country for three years. The total number of refugees fleeing Syria amounts to more than 3.2 million people, according to UNHCR.
