WASHINGTON, October 29 (RIA Novosti) — After the establishment of the a sophisticated state-sponsored Chinese cyberespionage unit by a consortium of private companies, the government must watch the private sector and global companies to meet cybersecurity needs, a former White House cybersecurity coordinator Howard Schmidt has told RIA Novosti.
"Number one, the government moves at government speed, the private sector operates at internet speed," Schmidt said Tuesday during the Government Cybersecurity Forum, regarding the role of private companies in providing security against cyberespionage.
"The private sector says, we don't have time for this, we've got to be successful… so as a consequence we can't wait, we're going to pour our resources together to make it work better and tell the government, "This is what we need from you"," Schmidt added.
“The bottom line is, in order to be able to foster a good business relationship in a global company, businesses will have to put all the resources together, [and] realize that there may be a risk out there,” the former White House cybersecurity czar concluded.
On Tuesday, a consortium of private security firms, led by Novette Solutions, published a report on their discovery of the operations of a sophisticated group of Chinese-government linked hackers named Axiom. The group reportedly attacked Fortune 500 companies, human rights organizations, software companies, journalists, academic institutions and government agencies.
