MOSCOW, October 31 (RIA Novosti) – Shigeru Miyamoto, the iconic video game designer, has premiered his first movie at the Tokyo International Film Festival, the Guardian reports.
Miyamoto and Nintendo unveiled a 3-D animated short based on the Pikmin video game series. Titled “Pikmin Short Movies”, it comprises three stories “The Night Juicer”, “Treasures in a Bottle” and “Occupational Hazards”. Overall, the game designer revealed that he created 20 – 30 animated shorts but chose three for screening at the film festival, IGN reported.
Pikmin, a strategy video game launched in 2001, follows the adventures of an alien, Captain Olimar, and creatures, resembling plants, called Pikmin. The third installment of the series was released in 2013. While Pikmin 3 was in development, Miyamoto started working on the movie. “There were people who approached me in the past about making a movie,” he told the Hollywood Reporter. “When Pikmin 3 was released, I thought the timing was right to try making a sort of animation pilot for the game,” he said.
There are no plans to create additional films based on the Pikmin series, Miyamoto stressed.
The game designer does not intend to shift from games to movies. “I haven’t moved over. But as computer graphics have gotten better, I started to feel that it’s something that I could get involved with,” Miyamoto told Reuters. “Making films in the past was something that was made with a completely different skill set but now I feel that it's rather similar,” he added.
Shigeru Miyamoto is best known for creating and producing some of the world’s top games, including Super Mario, Donkey Kong and The Legend of Zelda.
