DONETSK, November 1 (RIA Novosti) — Observers from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) have inspected polling stations in the east Ukrainian city of Donetsk ahead of Sunday's elections, a RIA Novosti correspondent in Donetsk reported Saturday.
According to the correspondent, a team of OSCE observers based in Donetsk visited a polling station in Donetsk School No 1. They checked polling booths and voter registration desks.
On Sunday, residents in parts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, also known as the Donetsk and Luhansk people's republics, will vote for regional leaders and legislative bodies.
The preparations for the elections come against a backdrop of continuing artillery attacks, allegedly by the Ukrainian troops that have been laying siege to the city since summer.
Kiev said it will not recognize the results of elections in the self-proclaimed republics and scheduled a separate election for the breakaway region for December 7.
The United States, the European Union and the United Nations have condemned the upcoming polls claiming they undermined a peace agreement reached in September in the Belarusian capital of Minsk.
Russia said it was going to recognize the results of the polls since they would help to "legitimize power" in the region.
