MOSCOW, November 2 (RIA Novosti) — An earthquake of magnitude 5.4 has been registered in the vicinity of Solomon Islands, US Geological Survey (USGS) reported Saturday.
An earthquake occurred at 22:13 GMT 51 kilometers (32 miles) south-west of Honiara, the capital city of Solomon Islands, USGS reported. The depth of the seismic focus was 10 kilometers (6.2 miles).
By now, there has been no information on victims and damages.
Earlier on Saturday another earthquake was registered in the southern part of the Pacific Ocean – in Fiji region. It was more powerful (magnitude 6.9) and had a seismic focus considerably deeper (at 262.2 miles).
Solomon Islands and Fiji Islands are parts of the so-called "Ring of Fire" – a strip of volcanoes and tectonic faults in the Pacific Ocean, and the area where 90 percent of all the earthquakes occur.
