Fourteen candidates will run for the presidency in Romanian elections on Sunday; 40 percent of voters intend to cast their ballots for the current Prime Minister Victor Ponta from the Social Democratic Party, the Romanian CSCI poll said.

MOSCOW, November 2 (RIA Novosti) — Romanians will vote at the presidential elections on Sunday to choose the successor of the incumbent Traian Basescu.

Fourteen candidates will run for the presidency.

The front runners in the elections are present Prime Minister Victor Ponta from the Social Democratic Party, and Klaus Iohannis, mayor of the Romanian city Sibiu and a candidate from the center-right coalition Alliance of the National Liberal Party and the Democratic Liberal Party.

According to the Romanian CSCI poll, 40 percent of voters intend to cast their ballots for Victor Ponta, and 29 percent support Klaus Iohannis.

Former Regional Development Minister Elena Udrea and former Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu follow the front runners.

Ponta, leader in the opinion polls, pledges to cut taxes, increase pensions, maintain friendly relations with both the European Union and China and even hold a referendum on the restoration of monarchy.

The current prime minister has strained relations with the incumbent president. Thus, Basescu marred Ponta's election campaign claiming he served as a spy in 1990s, which Ponta called a slander.

If none of the candidates wins in the first round, a runoff will take place on November 16.
