MOSCOW, November 3 (RIA Novosti) — Burkina Faso's army that has seized power in the state has pledged to form a unity government to rule the country in the transition period, army's statement said.
"A transition body will be put in place with all the components to be adopted by a broad consensus," according to a statement read out by an aide of Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Zida, as quoted by The News Sunday.
On Saturday Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Zida, the second in command of Burkina Faso's presidential guard, assumed power as the head of state, following violent protests over the country's President Blaise Compaore’s attempt to extend his 27-year rule.
The protests began on Thursday when lawmakers prepared to amend the constitution to allow the 63-year-old Compaore to contest in November 2015 elections. The protesters set the parliament building in the capital on fire.
On Friday Compaore resigned and called for the presidential elections within 90 days.
The European Union has called on the military to respect human rights, and the United States has condemned the military imposing its will on the people of Burkina Faso.
