Nationalist Party Member Becomes Speaker of Latvian Parliament

Inara Murniece, who headed the commission on human rights and public affairs in the previous Latvian parliament, has become the speaker of parliamnet.

RIGA, November 4 (RIA Novosti) – Inara Murniece, a member of Latvia's right-wing National Alliance party, has become the speaker of the country's parliament, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported Tuesday.

Sixty-eight members of parliament voted for Murniece, with 30 opposing the candidacy.

Murniece headed the commission on human rights and public affairs in the previous Latvian parliament.

The All for Latvia Party, which has formed the National Alliance party together with "For Fatherland and Freedom/LNNK" is famous for backing the annual marches of the Waffen-SS veterans, who fought on the side of Nazi Germany in the World War II. The National Alliance is the fourth largest party in Latvia's national legislation.
