EDINBURGH, November 4 (RIA Novosti) —A warning by the Labour First Minister of Wales that a vote in favor of a UK withdrawal from the EU as a result of a majority of English votes could "trigger a constitutional crisis", underlines the "massive economic risks" posed by an In/Out UK referendum, Clare Adamson a Member of the Scottish Parliament said Tuesday.
"These comments from Welsh First Minister Carwyn Jones are welcome as they further underline the massive economic risks posed by the Tory obsession with tearing us out of Europe against our will," Adamson, a member of the Scottish Parliament's European and External Affairs Committee said in a statement.
Adamson was responding after Carwyn Jones told the Welsh Assembly Tuesday, "If the UK leaves the EU on the basis of English votes it would trigger a constitutional crisis, the likes of which we haven't seen."
The Welsh First Minister said he would consider backing a Scottish National Party amendment ensuring all four constituent parts of the UK – Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and England – would each have to agree to withdrawal before the UK proceeded.
Adamson, a member of the SNP, called on the Scottish Labour party to back an amendment to any EU Referendum Bill that would require the support of a majority of voters in each of the four constituent parts of the UK before a decision was made on withdrawing from the European institution. "Labour in Scotland should show the same constructive attitude [as the Labour First Minister of Wales]," Adamson added.
UK Prime Minister David Cameron has claimed he would hold a referendum on the British membership in the European Union in 2017 if the Conservatives win the 2015 elections and he remains at power.
