MOSCOW, November 5 (RIA Novosti) — Kiev will provide the people of war-torn Donbas with humanitarian aid but is not going to fund the region’s “unrecognized formations”, Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council said Tuesday.
“Ukrainian state will ensure the supply of the Donetsk and Luhansk Regions with humanitarian aid, it’s not the fault of the people who live there and were unable to leave that they are in trouble,” the council's deputy secretary Oleksandr Litvinenko said. ”At the same time Ukraine will not fund this unrecognized formations,” he added.
On Sunday, the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics held elections for the heads of local governments and representatives of legislative bodies.
Following their vote, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said that Kiev will never recognize the elections' results and announced his plans to abolish the law granting special status to the Donbas Region.
Due to the conflict between the Ukrainian government and pro-independence forces, Ukraine's southeastern regions are mired in a severe humanitarian catastrophe with many citizens struggling without clean water, electricity and other essentials.
