WASHINGTON, November 5 (RIA Novosti) — Russian observers will monitor the ongoing midterm elections to the US bicameral Congress as a part of the OSCE security group's election observation mission, a spokesperson for the US Department of State told reporters Tuesday.
Speaking at a press briefing, spokeswoman Jen Psaki said, "We welcome to the United States some 40 OSCE parliamentarians, who are in Washington this week as part of an OSCE Parliamentary Assembly election observation mission."
She specified that part of their time OSCE parliamentarians will spend observing elections in Washington D.C., as well as in Northern Virginia and Maryland.
Psaki said the mission "includes parliamentarians from more than 20 OSCE participating states, including Portugal, Russia, Denmark, Germany Sweden, Norway, Ireland, Italy and Serbia, among others."
On Tuesday, Americans elect 36 senators, 435 congressmen, 36 governors and 46 state legislatures in what is called midterm elections as they occur in the middle of the sitting president's four-year term.
