WASHINGTON, November 6 (RIA Novosti) – Several hundred masked members of the hacktivist group Anonymous gathered outside the US White House Wednesday to stage a government-bashing Million Mask March, participants of the event told RIA Novosti.
"This list [of issues] goes on and on and we can sum it up all under one word and call it “the system,” which is failing," Million Mask Movement organizer Steve Grant told RIA Novosti. "The system has already failed, we're seeing the failure of it and now this [the protest] is the motion of this failure."
GMO, federal corruption over the monetary system, destructive medical and corrupt judicial system were among major issues that Grant named as those the group wants to bring attention to.
Courtney Driver, the founder of an independent news blog from Canada who traveled to Washington to be part of the Million Mask Movement protests said that she wanted to raise awareness about drone killings, however adding that “at the end of the day it's not just Obama who is in control of it.”
Protester Chris Barnard of Maryland explained that the activists wear masks to show solidarity with other group members and that their objective is to call attention to the issues brought by the group and not to gain any popularity.
"It's not so much about the masks to cover ourselves, said Barnard. "It doesn't really matter who's here as we're all here for the same purpose. Nobody's the leader as we're all leaders…you're not here for your name."
Over 400 Million Mask March protests have been planned around the major cities around the world on Wednesday to bring attention to a long list of issues that the group's Facebook page says "are wrong with this world."
The protests coincide with the 1605 commemoration of the execution of Guido Fawkes, known as Guy Fawkes who tried to blow up the United Kingdom's House of Parliament to express the dissatisfaction with the government.
