WASHINGTON, November 5 (RIA Novosti) – The new Republican Congress might expand the war in Syria and Iraq, and possibly even send ground troops to Iraq, Daniel McAdams, Executive Director of the Ron Paul Institute for Peace and Prosperity, told RIA Novosti Wednesday.
“Republican Senators have been quite open in demanding that [US] President [Barack] Obama expand the war to include US ground troops,” Daniel McAdams said.
Daniel McAdams also noted that last month Senator John McCain condemned Obama's current strategy in Iraq and Syria, and said that "more boots on the ground" are necessary to defeat Islamic State.
McAdams also warned that the Republican Party might increase pressure on Obama to take more aggressive actions against Russia over the situation in Ukraine.
“We can expect pressure to increase on President Obama from Senator McCain and his fellow neocons to launch more active measures against Russia, including more military resources for the Ukrainian government,” he explained adding that republican senators backed up more aggressive actions against Moscow, including directly arming the government in Kiev.
“It is unlikely that President Obama will be able to resist the pressure, though he may seek to soften the rhetoric,” McAdams said.
On Tuesday, Republicans took control of the US Congress by gaining the majority of seats in the Senate, and retaining the majority in the House of Representatives during the 2014 midterm elections. Congress has become Republican-led for the first time in eight years.
Americans voted on Tuesday in midterm elections, held in the middle of each president's four-year term. They decided who would fill all 435 seats of the House of Representatives and 36 of the 100 seats in the Senate.
The Democrats have lost races in the key states like North Carolina, Colorado and Iowa – states that contributed to Obama's victory in the 2008 elections.
