MOSCOW, November 6 (RIA Novosti) – A government-bashing Million Mask March organized by the Anonymous hacktivist group in London grew into clashes with police on Wednesday night with ten people arrested, the Metropolitan Police said on its Tweeter account.
"There were pockets of violence. 10 arrests…," the Metropolitan Police twitted adding however that the event in which all demonstrators cover their faces with masks was largely peaceful, "without major incident."
Security has been beefed up ahead of the event, which, according to the UK Anonymous website, is aimed to remind the governments "that the people will NEVER be oppressed again".
Hundreds of police officers have cordoned off the area where the rally was taking place. Earlier, special Section 60AA of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 authorizing the officers to remove masks when they feel a crime is committed was imposed by the Metropolitan police for a couple of hours.
Last week, police issued a letter through social media channels asking those involved in organizing the event to cooperate but received no response.
Over 400 Million Mask March protests have been planned around the major cities around the world on Wednesday to bring attention to a long list of issues that the group's Facebook page says "are wrong with this world."
The protest in London coincides with the 1605 commemoration of the execution of Guido Fawkes, known as Guy Fawkes who tried to blow up the United Kingdom's House of Parliament to express the dissatisfaction with the government.
