MOSCOW, November 6 (RIA Novosti) – Olympic gold medalist and world champion figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan will make his return to the ice during the Cup of China on Friday, according to the Associated Press.
During the Olympic Games in Sochi last year, Hanyu won Japan’s first gold medal in men’s figure skating. The 19-year old followed up on his success a month later, winning a world title in the World Figure Skating Championship in Japan.
16-year old Yulia Lipnitskaya of Russia will headline the women’s event. The miniature Russian starlet took the world of figure skating by storm, becoming the youngest Olympic champion in figure skating during the 2014 Sochi Olympics. Lipnitskaya, like Hanyu, has yet to make her debut this season, according to NBC Sports.
The Cup of China starts this Friday at the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center. There will be more than 50 of the world’s best figure skaters from 12 countries. This is the third stop of the six-leg Grand Prix series, according to Business Insider.
