BRUSSELS, November 6 (RIA Novosti) — The European Commission (EC) announced additional financing for EU research on Ebola, while the Netherlands have sent a ship loaded with medical equipment to the coasts of West Africa, and Luxembourg committed airplanes for European medical evacuation operations, an EC press release said Thursday.
"The EU is determined to help find a solution to Ebola. We are putting our money where our mouth is and boosting EU research on Ebola with an additional 280 million euros [$350.5 million]," the release said.
"A Dutch ship is sailing today from the Netherlands, loaded with ambulances, mobile hospitals, laboratories and other equipment," the document also said.
As for the planes, provided by Luxembourg, they "are retrofitted for the purpose with co-funding by the European Commission which will also finance the bulk of the transport costs for evacuations under the EU Civil Protection Mechanism".
The EC also announced that more that one billion euros ($1.25 billion) have been now pledged by EU member states and the European Commission for the Ebola crisis.
According to the WHO latest estimates, there have been a total of 13,042 reported Ebola cases, with 4,818 having been killed by the virus. The majority of lethal cases have been concentrated in three western African countries: Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.
