MOSCOW, November 7 (RIA Novosti) — Australia is trying very hard to avoid any discussions concerning contributions to the Green Climate Fund despite a desperate push by the Unites States and the European Union, The Guardian reported Friday.
According to the newspaper, the reason behind Australia's rejection to back contributions is the disapproval of the fund by Prime Minister Tony Abbott's government.
The Guardian noted that Australia has opposed next week’s G20 summit incorporating a separate paragraph on climate change into its final communique, instead opting to promote discussions on "economic issues."
The newspaper also noted that Australia had previously insisted that G20 discuss issues related to climate change only within its elaborations on energy matters.
The Green Climate Fund seeks to assist poorer countries in cutting down their emissions and tackling climate change.
In September, the United Nations called upon wealthy countries to make annual contributions between $10 billion and $15 billion to the fund. If the countries rise to the challenge and make the necessary contributions, the budget will comprise $100 billion by 2020. Up until this September, Germany was the only country to have significantly contributed to the fund, according to The Guardian.
