On November 8 iconic 1960-1970s movie star Alain Delon celebrates his 79th birthday. Born in 1935 in a Parisian suburb, Alain Delon was set to become a butcher. Luckily, his ambitions got the upper hand and he showed interest in acting. A couple of watershed meetings brought him to the scene.
Delon’s career in major pictures kicked off with “Purple Noon” (1960) in which he starred as Tom Ripley. Critics and viewers were astonished by the young man’s performance though he had no previous drama training.
Alain Delon went on to steal the show in “Rocco and His Brothers”, directed by Italian Luchino Visconti. Movie critic Bosley Crowther described his performance as “touchingly pliant and expressive.”
Epic drama “The Leopard” (1963) presented a constellation of Alain Delon, Burt Lancaster and Claudia Cardinale. The picture won the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival, while Delon ran for a Golden Globe Award for Most Promising Newcomer.
In 1968 the French actor performed in detective story “The Swimming Pool” alongside Maurice Ronet, Jane Birkin and Romy Schneider. Ironically, Delon and Schneider played a couple after having broken up in real life.
In 1968 Alain Delon took part in horror picture “Spirits of the Dead” comprising three stories based on Edgar Allan Poe’s fiction. He co-starred with Jane Fonda, Terence Stamp, and Brigitte Bardot.
Alain Delon starred as Inspector Foche in USSR-France-Switzerland drama “Teheran 43” that depicts the Nazis’ attempt to assassinate Joseph Stalin, Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt at the Teheran Conference in 1943. The movie topped Soviet distribution in 1981 with almost 48 million viewers.
At the dawn of his career Alain Delon was compared to such iconic legends as Gerard Philipe, Jean Marais and James Dean. Over the years he became an exemplar himself.
The actor has four children from several love affairs. Currently he is single, probably seeking a new muse. Above: Claudia Cardinale, Alain Delon and his daughter Anouchka, a young actress, at the 63rd International Cannes Film Festival in France.
