A bus crash in the Spanish region of Murcia left 14 people dead.

MOSCOW, November 9 (RIA Novosti) — A bus, carrying over 50 passengers, fell down an embankment in the Spanish region of Murcia, leaving 14 people dead, Spanish international news agency EFE reports.

The incident occurred on the Calasparra highway near the town of Cieza at around 11 p.m. on Saturday. The passengers from the village of Bullas were travelling back from a trip to Madrid when the bus plunged into a ravine 50 kilometers (31 miles) away from Bullas.

The driver survived the crash. He, along with a colleague, tested negative for drugs and alcohol, AFP stated, citing Joaquin Bascunana, the region’s prefect.

The driver has allegedly told emergency service workers that the brakes of the bus had failed, according to the Spain Report, citing a local radio station. However, no official reason for the crash has been provided. An investigation is currently underway.

12 people were initially reported to have died. Later two passengers succumbed to injuries at hospital.

In 2013, nine people died in bus accident in Spain.
