More than one million of Catalans have already expressed their opinion on the region's indepedendence at the polling stations by 1 p.m. local time.

BARCELONA, November 9 (RIA Novosti) — Over one million people have voted in the Catalonia independence consultation by 1:00 p.m. local time (12:00 GMT), the vice president of the Catalan Government (Generalitat de Catalunya) Joana Ortega i Alemany said Sunday.

Ortega i Alemany announced that by 1:00 p.m. local time (12:00 GMT) 1,142910 of the Catalonia’s 5,400000 registered voters have expressed their opinion at the polling stations.

According to the Catalan official so far no incidents have interrupted the voting process.

On November 9, Spain's northeastern autonomous region Catalonia is holding an unofficial independence consultation. Residents of Catalonia aged 16 and over are answering two questions: "Do you want Catalonia to become a state?" and "If so, do you want Catalonia to be an independent state?"

Spanish government sees the voting as illegal and tried to block it by filing complaints to the Constitutional Court. However Catalan President Artur Mas has stated that Catalonia will carry out the consultation despite central government's protests.
