MOSCOW, November 9 (RIA Novosti) — German Chancellor Angela Merkel called the fall of the Berlin Wall “a day of happiness and joy” and congratulated German citizens on the 25th anniversary of this historic event, AFP reported on Sunday.
"It is a message of confidence in our ability to tear down walls today and in future, walls of dictatorship, violence, ideology and hostility," Merkel said during her speech at a memorial on Berlin's Bernauer Strasse. “The fall of the Wall has shown us that dreams can come true," she added.
Thousands of people came to Berlin on Sunday to commemorate the day when the wall, dividing families, relatives and friends for 28 years, was torn down. For many Germans, the fall of the wall symbolized freedom, reunification with relatives and beloved and the end of the communist era.
As reported by Deutsche Welle, Chancellor Angela Merkel, Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit and other country’s officials visited remaining sections of the Berlin Wall and laid flowers nearby, honoring those who died while attempting to reach the West.
