Leonardo DiCaprio: 40 Years Sans Oscar

Leonardo Wilhelm DiCaprio, the renowned American actor and film producer, celebrates his 40th birthday on November 11.

He has been nominated for a total of five Academy Awards and ten Golden Globe Awards.

In 2013 DiCaprio starred in Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of Francis Scott Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby. The movie itself received mixed reviews from critics, but DiCaprio's acting was widely praised.

In 1993 DiCaprio co-starred with Johnny Depp in a movie by Lasse Hallstrom called What's Eating Gilbert Grape. The role of Arnie, Gilbert's mentally handicapped brother, earned DiCaprio his first nominations for the Golden Globe Award and the Academy Award.

Catch Me If You Can, an American crime drama film starring Leonardo DiCaprio, earned him his third Golden Globe Award nomination. The movie was filmed at 147 different locations in only 52 days.

James Cameron's Titanic earned DiCaprio worldwide acclaim. Many of DiCaprio's fans protested, however, when he wasn't nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role at the Academy Awards ceremony.

In 1997 DiCaprio ranked seventh among the 50 Most Beautiful People in the World according to People.

A committed environmentalist, in 2010 DiCaprio pledged $1 million to WWF to help save tigers, and in 2014 he pledged another $3 million to ocean conservation.

A first-ever gala hosted by the DiCaprio Foundation in 2014 helped raise over $25 million to help environmental causes.

DiCaprio's maternal grandmother, a German citizen Helene Indenbirken, was born Elena Smirnova in Russia. During a meeting with Vladimir Putin, DiCaprio mentioned that his grandfather on the father's side was also a Russian, so that actually makes him a "half-Russian."

In 2012, for the first time in his career, DiCaprio starred as a villain, a charismatic slave owner named Calvin Candie, in Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained. The role earned him his ninth Golden Globe Award nomination.

DiCaprio received his second Golden Globe Award after starring in The Wolf of Wall Street, a black comedy by Martin Scorcese, that was based on the eponymous memoirs of a former broker Joseph Belfort. Following the movie's release, DiCaprio declared that he is taking a hiatus from acting.
