The ministry is also responsible for dealing with the consequences of large-scale disasters, catastrophes and other emergencies and for supervising the use of funding that has been allocated to the government for disaster management and response.
Sergei Shoigu was Russia's Minister of Emergency Situations from the creation of the ministry until 2012. Shoigu is Russia's current Minister of Defense.
Along with humanitarian operations, EMERCOM also handles tasks related to land mine removal. According to the official EMERCOM website, the agency has cleared a total of 21,745,800 square meters of land and aquatic territory of land mines and other explosive devices.
Since it was established, EMERCOM has participated in over 70 humanitarian operations, both independently and alongside other international agencies.
