WASHINGTON, November 13 (Sputnik) – US Senate Republicans elected Mitch McConnell as their Majority Leader on Thursday during a closed door session, a spokeswoman from the Senator's office told Sputnik.
The decision was made "unanimously earlier this morning," the spokeswoman said.
Senator McConnell will assume his new role at the start of the Congressional session in January, taking over the incumbent majority leader Harry Reid's position.
Generating employment, improving economic situation and seeking the US energy independence will be in the focus of the Republican party, Senator McConnell said in a statement on Thursday.
The Kentucky Senator, McConnell was re-elected for a sixth Senate term on November 4 during the US midterm elections where Republicans won over both Congress and the Senate.
