BALI, November 15 (Sputnik) – A 7.3-magnitude earthquake has occurred in Halmahera, Indonesia, tsunami waves are possible, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) said in a statement Saturday.
"An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.3 occurred in Halmahera, Indonesia at 02:32 UTC [02:32 GMT] on Saturday November 15 2014," the statement said.
"Based on the preliminary earthquake parameters…hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 300 km [186 miles] of the earthquake epicenter," the statement added.
In a separate statement, the PTWC said that no tsunami was expected in Hawaii.
"Based on all available data a destructive pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no Tsunami threat to Hawaii," the statement stressed.
Halmahera is the largest island in the Maluku Island chain. It is part of the North Maluku province of Indonesia.
