MOSCOW, November 15 (Sputnik) — A team of 160 Chinese medical workers has arrived at Liberia to help the country fight Ebola virus, Chinese Ambassador to Liberia Zhang Yue announced Saturday.
"Today, 160 medical staff, who will manage and operate the China ETU [Ebola Treatment Unit] arrived in Liberia," Zhang Yue said, as published on the China Development Gateway portal.
The envoy added that the medical staff "comprises medical experts, epidemiologists, doctors, nurses, engineers and technicians and forms part of the first batch of 500 medical staff."
China is going to deliver 60 ambulances, 100 motorcycles, 10,000 health kits, 150,000 personal protective equipment to the countries that have been hardest hit by Ebola virus (Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone), Zhang Yue explained.
The current Ebola epidemic started in southern Guinea in December 2013 and soon spread to Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Senegal. The latter two countries have recently been declared free of the virus.
Ebola has already killed a total of 5,177 people, with 14, 413 confirmed, probable, and suspected cases of the virus having been reported, according to the latest World Health Organization data.
Although there is no officially approved medication for Ebola, several countries, including Russia, are currently working on trial vaccines.
