About 40,000 Ukrainian refugees currently remain in Russia; 12,500 children are among them.

MOSCOW, November 16 (Sputnik) — More than 39,000 Ukrainian refugees remain in Russia, Russian Emergencies Ministry spokesperson Alexander Drobyshevsky said in a statement Sunday.

"According to the updated information, there are 817 temporary accommodation centers in Russia that house 39,116 people who were forced to leave southeastern Ukraine, including 12,200 children among them," Drobyshevsky said.

He added that the refugees are provided with everything needed, including medical and psychological assistance.

The spokesperson noted that the Emergencies Ministry is updated on a daily basis on the situation with the Ukrainian refugees.

On November 8, Drobyshevsky said that the number of Ukrainian refugees exceeded 40,000 people, with 12,500 children among them.

The influx of Ukrainian refugees to Russia increased dramatically in the summer 2014 due to a conflict between southeastern Ukraine's independence supporters and Kiev forces that escalated when in mid-April the Kiev government launched a military operation in Ukraine's southeastern regions.
