BEIRUT, November 16 (Sputnik) – The death of more than 1,100 people has been documented during the siege of the town of Kobani, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported Sunday.
"SOHR documented the death of 1153 people since the 16th of September/2014 when the IS [Islamic State] started its attack on EIn al-Arab”Kobane”, until yesterday’s midnight in the 15th of November 2014," the organization said on its website.
According to the SOHR, those killed included 27 Kurdish civilians among whom were children. The number of Syrian Kurdistan's fighters murdered by IS militants reached 387. The extremist group lost 712 fighters during the confrontation, although the SOHR noted this number could be higher.
Since mid-September, Kobani, one of the largest Kurdish towns in Syria, has been besieged by Islamic State fighters. The US-led international coalition has been conducting airstrikes against IS positions, but the siege of the town has not yielded.
Islamic State is a Sunni jihadi group that has been fighting the Syrian government since 2012 and launched an offensive in Iraq in June 2014 seizing vast areas in both countries and announcing the establishment of an Islamic caliphate on the territories under its control.
