MOSCOW, November 16 (Sputnik) — Romanians cast ballots at the presidential elections' runoff Sunday, with voter turnout exceeding 58 percent, Romania's Central Electoral Bureau reported.

By 19:00 local time [18:00 GMT], the voter turnout had reached 58.65 percent, according to Romania's Central Electoral Bureau that is some ten percent more than at the first round on November 2.

Romania's Prime Minister Victor Ponta and Klaus Iohannis, the mayor of Sibiu and the president of the National Liberal Party, are competing in the runoff. Ponta was leading in the first round of the presidential elections with some 10-percent margin over his nearest rival Klaus Iohannis.

In his election campaign Ponta has pledged to cut taxes, increase pensions, maintain friendly relation with both the European Union and China and even hold a referendum on the restoration of monarchy.

According to the recent opinion polls, the candidates run neck-and-neck. The official results are expected to be announced on Monday.
