MOSCOW, November 17 (Sputnik) – Seven men have been charged with terrorism offenses in Northern Ireland, the BBC reported.
The men, aged between 30 and 75, were arrested at a house in Ardcarne Park in Newry, County Down, on November 10. According to the police, the group is under investigation for “violent dissident republican activity in Northern Ireland”, the Irish Times said.
All seven men have been charged with membership of the proscribed organization, six have been charged with possession of explosives and five men face charges for directing terrorism, the Irish Times reported.
The police arrested a dozen men, following a house raid last week. Five other men were released earlier. Some men were reportedly from the south of the border, the Republic of Ireland, RTE.ie said.
According to the BBC, the police operation was linked to an investigation into the continuous IRA activity in Northern Ireland.
“The arrest and charging of these individuals with what they are very serious terrorist offences clearly demonstrate our commitment to investigate all those involved in terrorism,” said Detective Superintendent Kevin Geddes, from the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Serious Crime Branch, reassuring the public that everything was under control.
