UNITED NATIONS, November 18 (Sputnik) — Jamaica's Patrick Robinson, was elected the fifth and final judge to the International Court of Justice following the election of the four other judges on November 6.
After the UN General Assembly and UN Security Council reached different results in electing the fifth judge, Argentina's Susana Ruiz Cerutti withdrew, leading Robinson to be elected by both bodies on Monday. He received all 15 votes in the Security Council, and all 185 ballots cast in the General Assembly.
Elected back on November 6 were Kirill Gevorgian from Russia, with all 15 possible votes in the Security Council's final round of the day, Mohamed Bennouna from Morocco and Joan E. Donoghue from the United States, both with 14 votes, and James Richard Crawford from Australia with 12 votes.
The candidates to the International Court of Justice are proposed by the states parties to the Statute of the Court. The Court is composed of 15 judges, with one third of them being elected every three years. Each judge is elected to a nine-year term after receiving an absolute majority in the UN General Assembly and the Security Council.
