MOSCOW, November 20 (Sputnik) — Two of three Al Jazeera journalists serving jail sentences in Egypt could be pardoned, as the issue is currently under consideration, President Abdel Fattah Sisi said in an interview with the France 24 channel Thursday.
"At the moment the issue is being discussed with a goal of finding an appropriate solution," Sisi said.
In June, three Al Jazeera journalists were sentenced to prison terms of between seven and ten years on charges of aiding the banned Muslim Brotherhood group and reporting false news.
The verdict for Doha-based television journalists — Australian Peter Greste, Canadian-Egyptian Mohamed Fahmy and Egyptian national Baher Mohamed — sparked international outcry.
Another 11 journalists, including a Dutch citizen and two British nationals, were sentenced to 10 years in prison in absentia.
The ruling came amid straining Egypt-Qatari relations, with Doha supporting the Muslim Brotherhood movement of Egypt's former president Mohamed Morsi, whom Sisi deposed.
