MOSCOW, November 22 (Sputnik) — Number of people injured in a suspected gas explosion at a luxury hotel Hyatt Regency in Central London has risen to 14 people, BBC reported Saturday.
According to London Ambulance Service, five of the injured were taken to hospital, while others received treatment at the scene.
The hotel located in Portman Square was evacuated following the gas explosion, which happened around midnight GMT time.
London Fire Brigade said that the cause of the explosion is being investigated, but it is believed to have been caused by a gas leak.
“35 firefighters from Soho and Paddington fire stations are attending as well as search and rescue and hazardous materials teams. The Brigade was called at 23.42 hours last night. The cause of the explosion is being investigated but is believed to have been caused by a suspected gas leak,” London Fire Brigade said in a statement published on its website.
The hotel building was severely damaged. Hyatt spokesman told BBC that there is a big hole in the outer wall of the hotel, a metal garage door is bulged out, and some windows at street level got blown out.
