GAZA, November 23 (Sputnik) — The Israeli military have shot dead a Palestinian in the northern part of the Gaza Strip, Ashraf Qedra, spokesperson for Gaza's Health Ministry, told RIA Novosti Sunday.
"A male aged 32, was killed near the border fence on the outskirts of the Jebalya city. He was the first one to be killed in such way after the [July-August] war," Qedra said.
The press service of the Israel Defense Forces has confirmed the use of weapons against two Palestinians detected at the border. The weapons were used after they ignored orders to stop and warning shots.
According to the local media, the man was probably killed while hunting birds.
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict escalated over the summer, when Israel launched Operation Protective Edge against the Hamas movement in response to the group's rocket attacks against Israel. More than 2,000 Palestinians, mostly civilians, and 66 Israeli soldiers and five civilians lost their lives as a result, according to the United Nations.
Israel and Palestine agreed on an open-ended ceasefire, brokered by the Egyptian government, on August 26.
