MOSCOW, November 23 (Sputnik) — "Leviathan", directed by Russian maître Andrei Zvyagintsev and shot by Mikhail Krichman, won the top prize at Camerimage, a Polish film festival devoted to cinematography, according to the festival’s official website.
Zvyagintsev’s dark epic won the grand prize at the festival – the Golden Frog Award. Silver Frog went to Palestinian drama "Omar", directed by Hany Abu-Assad and shot by Ehab Assal. The Bronze Frog Award was bestowed to "Mommy" by Xavier Dolan and Andre Turpin.
Camerimage is a major festival dedicated to cinematography and cinematographers. Every year, at the end of November the festival brings together professional cinematographers, students and other people associated with the film industry. This year, Camerimage was held from November 15 to 22 in Bydgoszcz.
"Leviathan", described by Zvyagintsev as a loose retelling of the Book of Job, is a present day social drama about an ordinary man struggling with corruption and intimidation in contemporary Russia.
"Leviathan" premiered at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival where it won an award for Best Screenplay. The film also won awards at several European film festivals, including the Grand Prix at the 58th BFI London Film Festival, the Grand Prix at the Munich festival and the main prize at Palic film festival in Serbia. Additionally, "Leviathan" is Russia’s Oscar submission.
In Russia, "Leviathan" is set to hit theaters in February 2015.
