MOSCOW, November 24 (Sputnik) — Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani on Monday discussed in a phone call the situation around Tehran's controversial nuclear program and noted significant progress in the latest round of talks in Vienna, the Kremlin said.
"The phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani was held on Iran's initiative," the Kremlin said in a statement.
"The presidents discussed the situation around the Iranian nuclear program and noted significant progress, achieved during the P5+1 and Iran ministerial meeting that recently ended in Vienna," the statement said.
Iran and the group of P5+1 mediators, comprising five UN Security Council permanent members — Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, China — and Germany, agreed Monday to extend the deadline to reach a comprehensive nuclear agreement until July 1 next year and to resume negotiations in the next few weeks.
The previous deadline to reach a comprehensive deal on Iran's nuclear program was slated for November 24.
Before the new deadline was announced on Monday, there was a lot of speculation as to whether or not the talks would be continued if the ministerial meeting failed to land an agreement.
