MOSCOW, November 25 (Sputnik) — North Korea held a mass rally Tuesday in the nation’s capital, Pyongyang, to protest a UN resolution condemning the country’s human rights record.

In a video provided to Reuters by North Korean state news agency KCNA, thousands of people gather in Kim Il-sung Square carrying banners praising their political leaders and condemning the US. The protesters then march down the street while chanting slogans.

North Korea Warns of Catastrophic Consequences After UN Resolution
Meanwhile, a public speaker announces that the resolution was promoted by the US, "the worst state of human rights abuses," according to KCNA.

Last week, the UN General Assembly committee dealing with human rights called for the UN Security Council to consider referring North Korea to the International Criminal Court. The resolution linked the alleged abuses to the North Korean political elite.

Such a scenario would create the possibility of the country’s leader, Kim Jong Un, being targeted by prosecutors, according to Associated Press.

North Korea said the resolution is based on allegations by defectors and backed by the US and other countries planning to overthrow its political regime.

North Korea Releases Two US Citizens: US Department of State
North Korean state media has been issuing critical articles on the human rights situation in the US and has threatened strong responsive measures against any attempts to topple its government.

A vote followed a UN Commission of Inquiry report published in February, which said the human rights situation in North Korea "exceeds all others in duration, intensity and horror."

The non-binding resolution will come before the UN General Assembly for formal approval in December.
