The UN Secretary General spoke with Poroshenko on Tuesday, and "thanked the President for his tireless efforts to find a peaceful and lasting solution to the conflict in south-east Ukraine".

The United Nations said that Poroshenko and Ban Ki-moon "discussed the severe challenges, surrounding the delivery of funds and essential supplies to parts of eastern Ukraine, and the President"s efforts to find an adequate solution".

According to the United Nations, Poroshenko "agreed that the Minsk agreements, provided a clear path towards peace and their implementation was essential".

In April, Kiev forces started a military operation against independence supporters in eastern Ukraine. On September 5, the conflicting sides reached a ceasefire agreement at a Contact Group meeting in the Belarusian capital, Minsk. However, both sides have been accusing each other of violating the truce since the ceasefire agreement came into force.

The conflict has claimed the lives of over 4,000 people, while more than 460,000 have been displaced since Kiev launched its military operation, according to UN estimates.
