MOSCOW, November 27 (Sputnik) — Officer Darren Wilson, who fatally shot 18-year-old Michael Brown in August, is set to leave the Ferguson Police Department and may not go back to being a police officer, his lawyer said.
“He is on paid leave right now and there are discussions that are going forth with the department to separate from the department in an amicable fashion,” Wilson's lawyer, Neil Bruntrager, said in an interview with CNN late Wednesday.
“Realistically, he can’t go back to being a police officer. He knows that. There is no illusion about any of this,” he added.
According to the lawyer, Wilson’s resignation is “not a question of if, it’s a question of when” and “the way in which he leaves, that's really important to him on a lot of different levels”.
On Monday, a grand jury decided not to indict Wilson, a white police officer who shot and killed African-American teenager Michael Brown in the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson on August 9.
Brown’s killing sparked weeks of often-violent protests in the city and related demonstrations across the country. A new wave of protests erupted on Monday following the grand jury’s decision.
