MOSCOW, November 27 (Sputnik) — At least 17 inmates have died in Venezuela from poisoned drugs, according to local police.
At least 17 inmates died of poisoning in the Uribana prison, in the country’s north-west, the Cuba Lane news outlet reported, citing local police.
The inmates broke into the prison’s medical facilities and consumed a variety of drugs, including antibiotics, which resulted in a mass poisoning.
The incident in the prison was part of a riot that began two days ago with a group of prisoners declaring a hunger strike. This riot was suppressed by the police. During the riot, the prisoners demanded the resignation of one of the prison wardens.
According to a report by the Venezuelan Prisons Observatory, overcrowding in Venezuela prisons has reached almost 200 percent, raising the likelihood of riots and other disturbances.
