MOSCOW, November 28 (Sputnik) – Attempts of the United States to isolate Russia fail, the countries continue their bilateral cooperation, Russian Foreign Ministry said.
“Certainly, there are attempts to isolate Russia. It is obvious that they fail because despite all the heavy pressure the United States is currently exerting, the cooperation continues,” Maria Zakharova, deputy head of the ministry’s information and press department said Thursday as quoted by Kommersant FM.
Zakharova added that the US talks on Russia’s isolation remain only theoretical, as the countries continue to cooperate on a range of important issues, including Iran’s nuclear program and chemical demilitarization of Syria.
The relations between Russia and the West have deteriorated over the last few months amid crisis in Ukraine. In July, the United States, the European Union and a number of their allies introduced a range of sanctions targeting Russia’s banking, energy and defense sectors over Russia’s alleged involvement in the escalation of the Ukrainian crisis. In response, Russia introduced embargo on imported food for those Western countries which announced restrictions against it.
On Wednesday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel stated that sanctions against Russia would not be lifted as soon as the situation in the Ukraine’s southeast remained tense.
