TBILISI, December 1 (Sputnik) – Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili has signed a law preserving the right of the country's interior ministry to wiretapping, the head of the Georgian presidential administration David Pataraya has told the Rustavi 2 TV channel.
"The President of Georgia welcomes the events that took place in the parliament today, as he believes that this is a democratic process," Pataraya said Sunday.
"After the parliament's decision, the president signed the law without delays," Pataraya added, referring to the parliament having overridden the presidential veto on a number of amendments to several phone tapping laws.
Georgia's parliament approved the amendments, which preserved the right of the country's interior ministry to phone tapping, on Friday. Margvelashvili vetoed the new phone tapping law package and offered the Georgian parliament a new version of the laws, which would have required judicial approval for any kind of wiretapping.
On Sunday, the parliament managed to override the presidential veto with 81 votes.
