MOSCOW, December 1 (Sputnik) – A student from India who went to Iraq to join the Islamic State (IS) militants has returned home after jihadists forced him to clean toilets and do other menial jobs, AFP said.
23-year old Areeb Majeed went to Iraq with three of his friends back in May, envisioning himself fighting against enemies of the Islamic State. Instead, the young man was forced to clean toilets, fetch water and do other lowly tasks, ABC News informed.
Majeed managed to contact his parents, after suffering a bullet wound for which he did not receive proper medical attention for a long time. After begging to take him to hospital, Majeed contacted his parents and flew back to India last Friday. On his arrival, Majeed was arrested by India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) with terror-related offenses, AFP said.
“I feel let down by my son. He had a bright career ahead of him, but he took advantage of our love and betrayed us,” Sheikh was quoted by AFP as saying.
According to UN estimates, as many as 15,000 people have gone to Iraq and Syria to join the IS militants since the group launched its offensive in June, the International Business Times reported.
