WASHINGTON, December 2 (Sputnik) – The media rights group Reporters Without Borders (RWB) urged Ukraine's parliament on Tuesday to strike down a proposal to create an information ministry.
"In a democratic society, the media should not be regulated by the government. The creation of an information ministry is the worst of all possible responses to the serious challenges that the government is facing," RWB secretary-general Christophe Deloire said in a press release.
The RWB said a government-controlled "information war" would be subject to abuse and undermine confidence in national media.
"Media independence and media freedom are the best weapons against propaganda. Enlisting journalists in a government-managed information war would just undermine the public’s confidence in the national media," the watchdog said.
The proposal to create an information ministry is expected to be ratified when Ukrainian parliament votes on the formation of a new government Tuesday.
