Pentagon Says Iran Bombed Islamic State in Iraq, Tehran Denies Involvement
BRUSSELS, December 3 (Sputnik) — The United States is not planning to coordinate its actions with Iran in fighting the Islamic State (IS), US Secretary of State John Kerry said Wednesday.

"Nothing has changed in our fundamental policy of not coordinating our military activity or other activities with Iranians, we are not doing that. And we are not only not coordinating militarily right now, but there are no plans at this time to coordinate militarily," Kerry said.

According to him, if any other country were to conduct military activity in Iraq, "it is up to them or up to the Iraqis to do that if it indeed took place."

"We are flying our missions over Iraq and we coordinate those missions with the Iraqi government," the Secretary of State added.

He also noted that Baghdad was responsible for preventing military clashes between the US and Iran's Air Forces in Iraqi airspace.

Earlier, Pentagon spokesperson Rear Adm. John Kirby said that Iran's F-4 Phantom jets had targeted IS positions in the Iraqi province of Diyala. However, Deputy Chief of Iran's General Staff Massoud Jazayeri said that these claims were "totally untrue," the Fars News Agency (FNA) reported Wednesday.

The IS, also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS) or the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), has been fighting the Syrian government since 2012. In June 2014, the group extended its attacks into northern and western Iraq, declaring a caliphate on the territories under their control. The US-led international coalition of over 60 states is currently conducting airstrikes against IS targets both on Iraqi and Syrian territory.
