MOSCOW, December 4 (Sputnik) — A total of ten militants were killed in a special counter-terrorism operation in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Chechnya on Thursday, the National Anti-Terrorism Committee said.
Security forces in the Chechen capital, Grozny, engaged in fierce gun battles with militants, who holed up in two buildings, including a school, after an attack on a traffic police checkpoint early Thursday.
"The site of the shootout [between police and terrorists] has been searched for evidence, a total of 10 militants have been killed in the operation," the NAK said in a statement adding that a large cache of explosives and weaponry had been found at the site.
The committee earlier reported that ten police officers were killed and 28 wounded during the shootout.
