WASHINGTON, December 4 (Sputnik) — The US military rescued some hostages held in Yemen by al-Qaeda but failed to free a US citizen, Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby said in a statement on Thursday.
"The United States attempted a rescue operation recently to free a number of hostages, including U.S. citizen Luke Somers, held in Yemen by Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula," Kirby said. "Some hostages were rescued, but others — including Somers — were not present at the targeted location."
According to the Pentagon, the operation was conducted in partnership with the armed forces of Yemen and involved air and ground components. Details remain classified.
