WASHINGTON, December 5 (Sputnik) – Americans, protesting against the United States funding Mexican military forces, are still waiting for Senator Bob Menendez's decision on their petition, protests organizer Roberto Lovato has told Sputnik.
"You have thousands of people around the United States fired up to do whatever needs to be done to end Plan Mexico, and you have the people of the US increasingly becoming aware that their government has a lot to do with what is happening with those mass graves, and those killings and those disappearings in Mexico," Lovato stressed.
On Wednesday, US protesters delivered multiple petitions to Senator Menendez, who chairs the US Foreign Relations Committee, calling on the termination of Plan Mexico.
Protesters ague that under the cover of a drug war, Plan Mexico funds are being used by Mexican military and police forces to perpetrate human rights violations and crimes against humanity, and thus, they must be immediately withdrawn from the Mexican government under the Leahy Amendment.
The Leahy Law, also known as the Leahy Amendment, was introduced by US Senator Patrick Leahy and was adopted in July 2013. It provides for US funds to be withdrawn from a foreign government in case they are proved to be involved in perpetrating human rights abuses or crimes against humanity.
On Wednesday, protesters rallied in front of Patrick Leahy's offices, demanding a termination of US funds sent to Mexico and calling for an end of Plan Mexico.
