MOSCOW, December 6 (Sputnik) — The Pakistani army has announced that airstrikes have killed al-Qaeda leader Adnan el Shukrijuma, considered by the FBI to be the chief of al-Qaeda’s global operations, in the South Waziristan region on Saturday, the BBC reports.
"In an intelligence-borne operation, the al-Qaeda leader Adnan el Shukrijuma was killed by Pakistan Army in an early morning raid in Shinwarsak, South Waziristan today,” an army statement said.
US federal prosecutors had earlier alleged that the Saudi-born Shukrijuma, who had lived in the US for nearly 15 years, was responsible for planned suicide bombing attacks on subway trains in New York and London in 2009. He has also been suspected of playing a role in the planning of al-Qaeda attacks around the world, from Panama to Norway.
The terrorist leader was suspected of having moved to South Waziristan recently due to a Pakistani military operation that has been taking place in neighboring North Waziristan since June. The Waziristan region, which borders Afghanistan, is a well-known base of operations for the Pakistani Taliban and other militant groups, which coordinate military and supply activities with their Afghan counterparts.
