MOSCOW, December 5 (Sputnik) – Russian pianist Daniil Trifonov has received two Grammy nominations, it was announced in a list of nominees published Friday for the 57th Annual Grammy Awards.
Trifonov, who has been described as “a true sensation” by Alan Gilbert of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, and “a very great talent” by acclaimed pianist Dang Thai Son, received a Best Classical Instrumental Solo nomination for his album “The Carnegie Recital,” which was recorded live in February 2013 at his Carnegie Hall recital debut. He was also nominated along with others for Best Classical Compendium for his work on “Mieczyslaw Weinberg”.
23-year-old Trifonov hails from Nizhniy Novgorod where he began to play music at the age of five, before attending the Gnessin School of Music in Moscow, and continuing his education at the Cleveland School of Music in the US. In 2011 he won the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow and the Rubenstein Competition in Tel Aviv, and in 2013 signed his first contract, with the label Deutsche Grammophon.
Also representing Russia in the Grammy nomination list is pianist and conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy, who conducted the Philharmonia Orchestra on Beppe’s Remote Galaxy album, nominated for Best Surround Sound Album. Ashkenazy is a seven-time Grammy award winner, and most recently in 2009 with the Philharmonia Orchestra won the Grammy for Best Instrumental Soloist(s) Performance for Prokofiev’s Piano Concertos Nos. 2 & 3.
